FARM MAPPING SOFTWARE: MAPPING FIELDS PROPERLY

Farm mapping software should let you draw and maintain accurate field boundaries, calculate areas consistently, and use those boundaries as the anchor for every record and observation. Boundary accuracy is not a cosmetic concern: areas drive rates, records, reporting and every comparison you make later.

WHY BOUNDARIES ARE THE FOUNDATION

Every per-hectare figure, every field-level observation and every year-on-year comparison depends on the boundary being right and stable. If boundaries drift between systems or seasons, comparisons quietly become meaningless.

Boundaries also change legitimately — a headland taken out, a margin added, a field split. The mapping system needs to record that change with a date, not silently overwrite history.

PRACTICAL MAPPING METHOD

  • Draw against recent imagery, then check against known features on the ground.
  • Decide a consistent rule for margins, tracks and headlands and apply it everywhere.
  • Record cropped versus total area separately where the distinction matters.
  • Date every boundary change and keep the previous version.
  • Keep one authoritative boundary set that other records reference.

MAPPING IS NOT JUST A PICTURE

A map that only renders is a poster. A useful field map is a set of objects that operations, observations, imagery-derived change and notes all attach to, so that opening a field opens its whole history.

WHAT THIS CANNOT TELL YOU
  • Digitised boundaries are as accurate as the imagery and method used; they are not a survey.
  • Mapped areas may differ from areas recorded for scheme or tenancy purposes.
  • Imagery availability and quality vary and affect how precisely boundaries can be drawn.
  • AXARA does not certify areas for scheme or contractual purposes.
HOW AXARA FARM HELPS
  • Draw and maintain field boundaries that act as persistent records, not disposable drawings.
  • Keep observations, imagery-derived change and notes attached to each field over time.
  • Preserve boundary history so comparisons across seasons stay honest.
  • Show provenance and dates for the imagery behind what you are looking at.
QUESTIONS
How accurate are digitally drawn field boundaries?

They are as accurate as the imagery and the care taken. They are suitable for management and comparison but are not a substitute for a survey or an official area determination.

Should I map cropped area or total area?

Both, with a consistent rule. Rates and comparisons usually need cropped area; tenancy and scheme contexts may use different definitions.

What happens when a field changes shape?

Record the change with a date and keep the previous boundary, so historic records remain attached to the shape they were captured against.

Can I import existing boundaries?

Existing boundary data is a good starting point, but always check it against current imagery — inherited boundaries are frequently out of date.

Does mapping require specialist GIS skills?

No. Drawing against imagery with consistent rules is enough for farm management purposes.
