GUIDES FOR FINDING, INVESTIGATING AND REMEMBERING THE PHYSICAL WORLD
Practical, evidence-first guides on land sourcing and investigation, farm mapping and observation, and infrastructure asset intelligence. Written to be useful on their own — with the limitations stated as clearly as the methods.
INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MANAGEMENT: THE RECORD PROBLEM
Infrastructure asset management depends on knowing what you own, where it is, what has been observed about it and when. Most portfolios struggle not because analysis is weak but because the record is fragmented across inspection reports, spreadsheets and individual memory. A persistent per-asset record with dated evidence is the foundation everything else stands on.
GEOSPATIAL INFRASTRUCTURE INTELLIGENCE
Geospatial infrastructure intelligence is the practice of holding spatial evidence about assets over time so that change, context and unknowns are visible together. It differs from GIS in emphasis: GIS renders and analyses spatial data, while an intelligence layer remembers, compares and directs attention.
INFRASTRUCTURE MONITORING: WHAT IT CAN HONESTLY DELIVER
Infrastructure monitoring using remote observation delivers one thing reliably: knowledge that something around or on an asset has changed since the last clear observation, with a date attached. That is genuinely valuable for planning inspection and attention. It is not condition assessment, and it does not detect structural defects.
SATELLITE MONITORING OF INFRASTRUCTURE
Satellite Earth observation contributes dated, repeatable views of infrastructure and its surroundings, making change visible across large portfolios without sending anyone to site. Its limits are fundamental: resolution constrains what can be seen, revisit intervals and cloud constrain when, and nothing about structural condition can be inferred from above.
ROAD ASSET MONITORING AND RECORDS
Road asset intelligence combines a persistent record of each asset — carriageway sections, structures, drainage, verges and street furniture — with observation of change in and around them. Remote observation is good at surroundings and access context; carriageway condition still requires specialist survey.
RAIL ASSET MONITORING AND RECORDS
Rail asset intelligence pairs a persistent record for each asset and corridor section with observation of change along and around the corridor — vegetation, earthworks surroundings, drainage, encroachment and adjacent activity. Safety-critical assessment of track, structures and earthworks remains an inspection and engineering responsibility.
